Dixie Carolyn Atkinson

Dixie Carolyn Wooten Atkinson, 85, died Tuesday, August 18, 2020. She was born February 6,

1935 in Sampson County, daughter of the late Marvin and Nellie Wooten. She was married to the late

William Thurman Atkinson of Baltimore, Maryland. Dixie was brought up in Shady Grove Free Will

Baptist Church in Newton Grove and she continued to have a special place in heart for her childhood

church home. Dixie was a graduate of Westbrook High School and she worked in customer service for

UPS. After her retirement in 1996, she found much joy in gardening, sewing, painting, watching her

beloved Tar Heels, and spending time with her family. Dixie was affectionately known as "Ma" to her

grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Susan (Greg) Ray, Betsy (Chad) Hord and Thomas (Kathy) Atkinson;

grandchildren, Jennifer (Daniel) Rose, Gabrielle and William Atkinson; great-grandchildren, Grayson,

Jake and Charlotte Rose; two sisters, Nell Wooten Hairr and Joyce Wooten Holbrook.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Marcus Hugh

Wooten, James Edward Wooten, Elton Graham Wooten, Evander Clifford Wooten and June Davis

Wooten.
