In loving memory

Gary Woodrow Winstead

June 18, 1956 – October 8, 2023

Rocky Mount , NC

Gary Woodrow Winstead ,age 67, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina went to his heavenly home on October 8, 2023. Gary was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Calvin Winstead and Jeanette Farmer on June 18, 1956.

Gary was a man of many talents, interests, wisdom and skills, whose passion for life showed in many ways. He was a loving Brother, Dad, Granddad, GREAT Granddad and dear friend to many. He was a hard worker who lived a full life, loved God, was proud of his native ancestry, enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was gifted with both musical and technical abilities. As the grandson of a Cherokee woman, he was a proud man with a deep connection to his ancestors. Gary was a phenomenal storyteller.

In fact, one of Gary’s many talents was in telling stories about the events and the insights he gleaned from his very full life. He was also a religious man who loved God deeply, and this love and reverence of the Lord shone through his avid knowledge of the Bible. Gary was a profoundly creative individual as well. He worked skillfully with his hands, and was able to construct anything he desired. Through this skill, he could build a solid piece of handmade furniture as easily as he could construct an intricate melody.

His creativity, keen ear and dexterity allowed him the ability to play many different musical instruments. His love musically for the guitar was deep, and through it he was able to express himself in a beautiful and constructive way. This love for music brought him much happiness throughout his life. While he left us far too soon, his impact will be felt for generations to come.

Gary is survived by his sister Janet (husband Gordon Hodge); his two Sons, Frank Pope (wife Angel) & Timothy Winstead; his daughter, Kristen Alston (husband Monta); his grandchildren, Sebastian Pope, Anthony, Kamron, Landon, & Wave Alston, Kiley & Jake Winstead; and his Great Grandson O’Rion Pope along with his extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his Parents.

A private service will be held Saturday November 4, 2023.

Will miss him, but he is in a better place and no more suffering. I can see him playing his guitar. Gary was a handful growing up, but loved his sister, Janet. Great memories when he lived with Janet fixing her upstairs. NEVER DID FINISH GARY. Ha Ha.

Gary and I did many fun things together. We lived on the same street as young boys. We played many hours with little Hot Wheels and riding bikes. Gary could ride on one wheel the whole length of our street. I visited him at Duke hospital.. He was so excited that I visited. I took some old Hot Wheels for him to have. Gary talked of his faith and his family and I believe he is at home with Jesus now. Amen!!
