James Edward Bodino, affectionately known to many as Jim, Jimmy, Jimbo, JB, or simply Coach, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, at the age of 83 in Raleigh, NC. Born in Jersey City, NJ, on May 16, 1942, Jim lived a life filled with love, purpose, and unwavering faith—a life that touched countless others in beautiful and lasting ways.
Jim was the devoted husband of Donna Osterhoudt Bodino, his high school sweetheart, best friend and partner through 62 years of marriage. Together, they built a home rooted in faith, laughter, and unconditional love. He was the proud and loving father of Frank Bodino, Mick Bodino, Lisa Rocco, and Gina Holmquist—each of whom carries forward his strength, compassion, and sense of humor. He also welcomed with open arms his children-in-law, Maria Bodino, Cindi Bodino, Jim Rocco, and Ed Holmquist, loving them as his own.
Jim was a joyful and deeply involved grandfather—"Pop" to Nick Bodino Powers, Jacqueline Bodino Davis, Miranda Rocco Bosl, Alex Ray, Jimmy Rocco, Amber Ray, Joey Rocco, Dylan Bodino, and EJ Holmquist. His legacy of love continues through his great-grandchildren: Isla and Killian Davis, and Taylor Bodino. Nothing brought him more pride than watching his family grow, thrive, and share the values he held so dear.
Raised in a close-knit family by his parents, Frank and Rose Bodino, Jim was the proud older brother of Frank Bodino. He considered Onnolee Allieri a sister, not just a sister-in-law. From an early age, he stood out—not just in athletics at Boonton High School or later at the University of Dayton—but in his deep sense of purpose and care for others.
Jim found his true calling not only in his work but in service to others, especially as a coach and mentor to generations of young athletes in Mt. Olive, NJ. Whether it was on the football field or the baseball diamond, Coach Bodino was a steady presence—encouraging, tough when needed, always fair, and deeply loving. He called the boys he coached “my boys,” and they remained a part of his heart long after the final whistle.
Beyond the field, Jim was a respected businessman, a man of honor and deep Catholic faith. He and Donna taught their children to walk with God, to do what’s right even when it’s hard, and to live with humility and gratitude. His love for his country, his church, and his family was constant and deeply felt.
Jim had an incredible zest for life. He loved sports—especially Notre Dame football and the New York Yankees—and could talk stats and stories for hours. A lifelong reader and gifted writer, Jim offered wisdom wrapped in wit, always knowing just how to encourage, challenge, or comfort. His loyalty ran deep, and his kindness left lasting impressions on all who knew him.
To know Jim was to know what it meant to be loved. He was a rock for his family, a loyal friend, a mentor, and a man of quiet strength. He lived by example, giving generously of himself, and always showing up when it mattered most. He was, in every sense, a "friend’s friend."
A Funeral Mass honoring Jim’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, July 26th at 10:30am, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Budd Lake, NJ, followed by a celebration of life—a gathering filled with the stories, laughter, and love he treasured most.
Jim’s spirit lives on in the family he cherished, the lives he shaped, and the legacy of love, faith, and integrity he leaves behind.
In honor of Jim’s memory, the family invites memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
