James “Peyton” Overby, 48, of Oxford, NC passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of Dennis Calvin Overby Sr (Nancy) and the late Nancy Pergerson West.
Peyton is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Tracy Wilson Overby, daughter Bailey Grace Overby, son Lucas Peyton Overby, brothers Calvin Overby (Nicole), Stewart West, sister Chasity Overby. Additionally, he is survived by his mother in-law Teresa Newby Christopher (Michael), brother in-law Christopher Wilson (Carrie) & several Nieces.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his father in-law Lynn Wilson.
Peyton attended J.F. Webb High School and Vance-Granville Community College. A dedicated worker, he spent many years serving as a Supervisor at Dill Air Control in Oxford. Outside of work, he truly knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures. He was happiest when he was out on his kayak fishing, embarking on treasure hunts through metal detecting & estate sales, or cheering on his beloved Boston Red Sox while enjoying a cold beer. His fun-loving spirit and passion for adventure will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
