In loving memory

Larry Roberson

May 16, 1944 – January 18, 2022

Larry Edward Roberson, 77, of Louisburg, NC, passed away in the early hours of January 18th, 2022. After a long battle with cancer and recent placement with hospice, Larry passed at his Lake Royale home with his wife of 41 years by his side.

The oldest of four children, Larry was born and raised in the Florida panhandle. Growing up surrounded by naval aviators, it seemed like a natural fit for Larry to join the ROTC program in high school. He was the first in his family to go to college, attending Auburn University on an ROTC scholarship where he also joined the track and field team. He graduated proudly as a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps and served a full career with various assignments around the globe, all revolving around military aviation. Most notably, Larry was invited to join the cadre of pilots for Marine Attack Squadron VMA-231, the "Ace of Spades". They were stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and flying the AV-8A Harrier. He served as a pilot, pilot trainer, Executive Officer, and eventually as the Commanding Officer of the squadron, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Larry loved to cook, especially grilled and smoked meats. He was an avid reader, enjoyed good music, and kept up on politics and of course Auburn football. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working outside- often with a dog on his heels. He was kind hearted and generous to a fault. He will be remembered when an airplane flies overhead or a lefty sits down at the table.

Son of the late Ralph Edward Roberson and Imogene Vernell McCurdy Roberson, Larry was preceded in death by brothers Mark and Duane Roberson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Thurman Roberson; son, Scott Roberson married to Andrea Benin; son, Matthew Roberson married to Suzanne Webster; daughter, Morgan Stoudt married to Matt; grandchildren Anna, Samuel, Madalyn, Irelyn, Raelyn, and Harvey; and sister Dianne Mish married to Tom.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation in Larry's honor.

Sad news. Hard to find words to ease your pain. If you could just stop for a moment, think of Larry, and force a smile. I deployed with VMA-513 in '75'76 and I can't remember a time when he wasn't smiling. In the hardest of times he and Ted Hermann could be caught looking on the bright side of things. Sending out prayers for you and the family. S F TC
