Mona Lee Scott, writer, artist, lover of books and sailing, passed away at her home in Micro,
North Carolina, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Mona was born on January 8, 1941, in Evansville, Indiana to Canneth and Kathleen Sarles.
She was a strong and independent woman who did so many things that women in her
generation were not expected to do. While raising her three children as a single parent and
working full time, she completed her bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in
library science. She worked as a librarian on several government contracts, including many
years at Goddard Space Center in Greenbelt, Maryland and at the Joint Personnel Recovery
Agency at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.
Mona spent much of her life pursuing her many passions. She loved sailing and for many years
lived on a sailboat in Maryland. She also loved the mountains and traveling out west on
camping trips with her children. She was a painter and left behind many of her beautiful
paintings. She loved gardening and always had a beautiful garden at her home. She loved to
sew and made quilts, clothing and bridesmaids dresses for family weddings.
Her biggest passion though, was her love for books and writing. She had an extensive library
and was always working on a novel. She self-published one of her fiction books, and published
a conversion table for the Dewey and Library of Congress classification systems which is still
sold on Amazon. In her last years, she was working on a set of travel books for all the national
parks.
She is survived by her three children, Robin Jones (George), Jonathon Scott (Maria-Luz), Tara
Prochazka (Joe), five grandchildren, Bryan Jones (Amanda), Kasey Scott (Megan), Jonathon
Scott, Jr., Noah Scott (Maya), Jasmine Scott, great grandson, Mac Jones, sister, Holly Polston,
and sister, Karen Pritchard (Charles).
Mona is already greatly missed by her family, but her memory lives on in her paintings and
books.
